Tech giants face significant regulatory pushback as Europe gears up for epochal fight

Digital platforms including Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google are facing a bleak 2021, with the European Union this week announcing a raft of regulation that goes to the heart of Big Tech’s business model. If adopted in their current form, two legislative proposals — the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act — will force the platforms to remove illegal content, while also challenging their market power. The revamp of digital regulation announced this week suggests that the “too big to care” culture of digital platforms may be on borrowed time.
