RWE seeks compensation over Dutch coal phaseout under Energy Charter Treaty

German energy giant RWE has started an arbitration proceeding against the Dutch government in a bid to seek compensation for the country’s decision to phase out coal from power generation by 2030.

The company is invoking the Energy Charter Treaty, or ECT, a piece of international law which regulates energy-related dispute
