Comment: Didi's fine underscores liability on controlling entity for data offences in China

China's record fine against Didi Global sends a warning to foreign-domiciled companies with data-rich operations locally. Even if they are listed using a meticulously-designed variable interest entity structure, they still can't get around Chinese oversight on data security and personal data protection.

Last week, Didi Global was fined 8.026 billion yuan ($1.19 billion)
