The UK’s competition watchdog has rightly shown that talent and independence can protect an agency from populist winds, against a backdrop of legal problems caused by Brexit, a British judge at the EU courts has said.

Separately, an official at the Competition and Markets Authority said the regulator was “battling” to minimize the disruption of Brexit and not neglect vital cases.

With just a few months to go until Brexit next March, Ian Forrester, Britain’s judge at the EU General Court, said the Brexit process had confronted ministers, officials and the public with “extraordinarily difficult and uncertain questions ... which don’t have clear answers.”
