Damages Litigation: A new frontier for Europe - London 2014

29 January 2019 9:49am

New opportunities presented by EU Damages Litigation Legislation

Opening keynote speaker:
Peter Freeman CBE QC (Hon)
Chairman, Competition Appeals Tribunal
Closing keynote speaker:
Joaquín Almunia

Commissioner for Competition, Vice-President, European Commission

In recent years, there has been a sharp rise in antitrust litigation. Courts in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands now frequently play host to multi-million euro lawsuits against cartel members, triggering lengthy court battles over unchartered legal territory. Further legislative changes in Europe and the UK mean the growth trend will continue.

The opportunity for consumers and small business to group together and bring claims will also pose questions for the courts and companies alike. The move should make litigation faster and less expensive, providing a business opportunity for smaller – and more regionally focused – law firms.
